Manchester district named best neighbourhood in UK
Manchester's Northern Quarter has been named the best neighbourhood in Britain.
The central district, often viewed as the cultural and artistic heart of the city, beat off competition from Belfast and Glasgow to win the Academy of Urbanism's great neighbourhood award for 2011.
Chairman of the London-based quango John Thompson said the Northern Quarter had reaped the benefits of a long-term regeneration and development programme.
Guests of The Light ApartHotel will already be familiar with the area, as it is home to many popular bars and restaurants, independent shops and the famous Affleck's Palace indoor market.
Mr Thompson described the district as "a vibrant contemporary extension to Manchester city centre", but noted that it has also managed to retain its own identity.
Earlier this year, streets in the Northern Quarter were used to shoot scenes for the forthcoming Hollywood movie Captain America: The First Avenger.
The other finalists for the 2011 best neighbourhood award were Pollokshields in Glasgow and Belfast's Cathedral Quarter.
